i had to mercy kill a young rabbit on the towpath this morning on my way in to work

i was going under the market st. mills st. bridge and i saw a rabbit off by the inner wall and i was like 'well that's weird' so i slowed down to check on it, because it looked reasonably young and maybe just launched itself off of the hill/stone wall nearby where there's a bunch of wildflowers and tall grass



when i went to investigate it i saw some blood near it and thought maybe a cat got it. probably in shock, but maybe it would bounce back. i'd relocate it up into the grass and leave it be

when i went to pick it up, i felt more blood and looked down and both of its legs were just dangling with exposed bone and loose skin and that was startling! i looked up and saw that the area along the top of the stone wall had been recently mowed and, with how fresh the blood was and how the rabbit was still in an active state of shock, figured it couldn't've happened that long ago

i laid it to rest under the little tree on the hill, amongst the wildflowers
