obliviousally: [ dall-e ] (liminal)
this last week has been surreal

i came out to warren on, uh, tuesday i think? my mom got moved to hospice monday night and the facility gave me a call tuesday morning to e-sign intake paperwork. i also spoke to the hospice nurse who told me, y'know, it'd be ideal for me to be in town and to come visit her. i'd been in cleveland to visit on the sunday prior and she was kinda still with it, but the decline has been SO fast and by the time she was in hospice she wasn't really talking at all (or, like, she would be trying to talk, but couldn't really speak). so i took the day off and poked at chris to give me a ride into warren b/c the car wasn't charged and tony wasn't comfortable driving in the snow

tuesday evening, donna (bud's...sister? i think she's actually his aunt, but they were the same age and raised together - the family ties are weird in bud's family), jenna (donna's wife), and nikki (bud's relation, iirc, but she calls herself my mom's cousin/pisces-sister lol) were at the hospice facility with me, but me and nikki went home and donna and jenna stayed the night. on new year's eve, me, donna, jenna, and lydia (bud's bio-kid, my step-sister) all stayed over b/c the weather/roads were SO bad and the hospice nurse said, you know, she was probably close. maybe a couple hours. i slept on the floor of the room (which wasn't as bad as it could've been lol) and at one point in the middle of the night she asked for me, so i sat up with her for awhile

on new year's day, i stayed out there by myself after folks left in the afternoon. but prior to that, my youngest sister adri reached out on fb and asked if she could come see her. which, obv, i was gracious about. adri is the only one who's ever made an attempt to reconnect with my mom, sabrina and robbie have been hard no contact the whole time (which, like, i also don't blame them, shit's just complicated). so she came down from cleveland and we talked a little bit and i let her have all the time she needed alone to talk to my (our) mom. it was just, idk, surreal. the whole thing, surreal lol. it wasn't a negative thing, at all, mostly bittersweet

i slept there new year's day night, but i got to sleep on the other bed this time at least lol. i spent a lot of the night kind of glancing over going 'is she still.....oh, yeah, still breathing' and playing music all night. it was pretty peaceful, she seemed like she rested well that evening

on the 2nd, the nurses adjusted her a bit and cleaned her up and she was a bit more animated (likely partially from the discomfort) before getting her morphine. her friend cat came out to visit, as well. i went back to the house in the afternoon (jenna stopped at aldi for me to grab some real food lol). i got antsy midday and took the bus downtown to return the elfquest books i'd checked out from the library when i was out here after thanksgiving, then walked around a bit. stopped at the comic book store and bullshat with greg for a minute, took the back shortcut walk between the library and my gma's old place on porter st (also where my mom and i used to live, in the house next door), went to the mocha house for some treats, walked down to my favorite cemeteries and took some photos, then walked back to my mom's place and took a long, hot bath and hung out with the cats

i was gonna go back out to hospice today, but i've been hacking and coughing (i'm still SO congested from my cold before xmas) and i opted to take a day where i just chill out and don't do fuckin anything and i think that's been a good plan

but i've got some thai coconut chicken and cilantro lime rice, so i'm gonna have that for dinner and sit around with the cats and re-watch buzzfeed unsolved lol

stuff and hospice

obliviousally: (empty)
there's a lot i want to write about. it's not things i DESIRE to write about, but should write about regardless

my mom is going into hospice soon. she's been in the hospital since the 9th and, before that, over thanksgiving.

at the beginning of august, we were lazing around in the inflatable pool in her backyard, we were at geneva on the lake riding a ferris wheel and eating good food, we were stopping at weird little amish country general stores. she should've had more time without him, more time in her own home, with her family, living the life she didn't get for decades because of his garbage ass

i'm kind of numb about it right now, trying to sort out legal things, sitting at work typing this like it's not going to make me upset anyhow.

i've been sick the last week, i feel bad because i haven't been able to visit her in the hospital much, but i only would've gotten her sick and i wasn't fit for traveling anyhow

i'm exhausted, physically and mentally rn. once the former sorts itself i'll be able to manage, but it's a lot at the moment. i just feel in a daze more than anything, but i know that's partially the cold situation. i'm so congested and zonked out, i wanna be asleep for another day x_x

i'm going up tomorrow to see if we can sort out some legal stuff. i know sunday isn't ideal for it, but i think if she can get some papers written (living will, for one) up while she's still communicative/cognizant and we can get that stuff sorted, it'll be less that'll need to go to probate court when it finally happens

stuff and wonderfest and showgirl!

obliviousally: (possum trashcan)
the internet is off at the house, so i'm doing the thing i did when i was sixteen and had no at home internet: going to the library

this also means i'm writing this entry pre-emptively at home b/c the library doesn't open until 1pm and it's 10am rn lol

i'm in my feelings about some shitty things said to me this morning, but yesterday was really nice regardless

yesterday tony and i went to wonderfest! it's a little block party kind of thing in our neighborhood (west hill) that they do annually (and they do some other small events at the pocket park there, too). they were doing some artsy workshop things we thought we interesting, so we each signed up for one.

i did indigo dyeing! the folks running it were really nice (students from kent state and a local artist) and everyone tried different techniques on their items (we got a handkerchief and then another item we could pick from the stuff they brought, i did a baggy shirt as my second item). i'm always kinda surprised what DOESN'T catch the dye when you do stuff like this, and how much you kind of have to plot out what you're doing if you want it to look like something specific. i was going for a star with my handkerchief and tied off the points, but did not think to block out the center of the star (as though the dye would just magically know what i wanted and avoid those areas lol), so i ended up with a handkerchief with a bunch of circles (which tony joked looked like anuses jklghdfgld)

for my shirt i wanted, like, one long diagonal swipe across it and rolled it that way specifically and then wrapped it around a dowel. when i unrolled it, the swipe was WAY bigger than i wanted lol - i thought the dye would permeate further. i ended up doing a second dip by just folding the part i wanted undyed and then dipping in the rest of the shirt THEN flipping it over and wringing it out so the dye bled down into the white section. still wasn't QUITE what i was going for, but it was still a fun experience!

tony did the clay and resin workshop and made a cool little heart based on one of his newer OC's/sona's.

afterwards, we went home for a bit and then i popped back out to grab our items (his had to bake and mine had to dry) and went up to highland to get some drink and stop at the library for movies. ended up grabbing the deluxe edition of 'battle angel alita' which, like, I OWN MOST OF in the paperback manga, but it's boxed away somewhere and i haven't read it in decades i think lol. and every time i WOULD read it, i'd still feel lost b/c the writing felt so dense and there were so many footnotes lol. but i committed this time!! i'll have to pick up the other volumes while it's still fresh in my mind

i'm going down to the main library today (the only branch that's open sundays, even tho it's only for four hours and we all have a lot of Opinions™ on that at work) and picking up a bunch of DVD's for tony and i know i'll end up grabbing more shit than i need b/c their graphic novel section is pretty varied

after getting back from highland i came home and got dressed to go see the 'the life of a showgirl' movie theater release thing at the nightlight with sam!

i WAS holding off on listening to the album before going, so it'd be a surprise, but i DID cave and listen to it earlier in the day anyhow (sam did the same lol) - kinda glad i did b/c they played the clean lyrics at the theater (which makes sense tbh) and the difference for some of the lyrics is STARK (clean is good for some tracks, explicit is good for others, some are fine either way).

but it was a fun little experience - the audience was chill (and there weren't too many folks, the nightlight is a small arthouse theater so it wouldn't've been packed like a regal or something) and we didn't have screaming preteen girls right in our ears x_x i like the idea of artists doing something like this, getting fans together and showcasing their new work, showing us some behind the scenes stuff with the making of a music video. it's just fun to see behind the curtain in that aspect

the album is 'just okay' for me. like, nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. i'll give it some more full listens, like i usually do with taylor swift albums, and some stuff will grow on me. i feel that maybe she really used a lot of her writing juice on TTPD and, yeah, this album was written in a much happier/more positive time of her life - a blossoming new relationship, the implied 'closing the chapter' on a lot of her previous subject matter (with TTPD's conclusion), but coming off of the tails of TTPD, it doesn't feel like it has as much depth to me (or even for me! and that's also fine lol)

i really love the first three tracks on the album, tho, and the chorus for 'ruin the friendship' has been stuck in my head. i also unironically love 'CANCELLED!'. 'eldest daughter' was kind of a let down, but i've had hayley williams' 'kill me' on repeat and it's a stronger eldest daughter type track lol. it kinda feels like taylor saw a bunch of artists writing eldest daughter stuff and wanted to jump in b/c she, too, is an eldest daughter, but i don't think the vibes are QUITE the same (or, also, it's just not relatable to ME lol). i feel a lot of the tracks, as a whole, are a bit too rhyme-y tho. not the end of the world, just noticable

i'm thinking about going back thru her albums and tracking the songs that i've deemed favorites just to see which albums i've vibed with more vs. the ones i'm just kind of 'okay' about. could be a fun little 'no internet' project lol

other than that, things have been going. still doing grand jury duty, so i'm only physically at work maybe once or twice a week rn. and this week, not at all i believe! i have court all week and endo appointment (thyroid surgery stuff followup) on friday. i'm off on wednesday, which is lame b/c i was aiming originally to be off on saturday, but my manager is.....................difficult.

this also reminds me i need to put my schedule on the calendar....

stuff and FURREST CITY MINI CON

obliviousally: (ally antitribu)
saturday was FURREST CITY MINI CON!!!!!

it was extremely successful - 192 attendees in total!! we had a small space at sears think[box] on the case western reserve university campus (a staff member used to work there and had organized a small meet there previously and discussed that it might be a good option for a larger than a meetup, con-like event). and that's something we worked on over the last year or so (definitely moreso others on staff than myself, especially our finances person)!

i spent all day running around, mingling, doing whatever was needed in the moment - hanging out up by the parking garage to be a wayfinding point to make sure people could navigate their way to the venue (love what a maze college campuses can be), going along to help with the west side market excursion (and also acquire lots of goodies!!), meeting lots of folks for the first time, watching in on panels, poking around the little dealer's room, watching people play video games, etc., etc.

i'm honestly so happy this came together so well and went off without a hitch - folks who know me know i've historically been kind of a debbie downer (and sort of an aggressive realist when asking pointed questions to the people who'd claim it would be 'so easy' to get a con going here) when it would come to establishing a furry convention in cleveland. lots of factors are already kind of 'against' it - we're sandwiched between anthrocon and midwest furfest, two of the biggest 3-4 conventions in the states. it costs money, it needs people willing to do the thankless work of running a convention (and events in general!), and it needs people willing to simply show up. and i think it really just needed the right combination of people to get the gears moving - we have an amazing board and staff that are really committed to cultivating a real, living community and that's so deeply, deeply awesome and i'm so very happy to be proven wrong about my prior feelings on the matter X3

after we closed up and cleaned out the space, the remaining staff walked up to little italy and had coffee/food at a little tea shop called algebra and i finally got off my feet lol

also, rode the rail for the first time in cleveland! i never, like, bothered with it previously, but we were able to take it directly from the corner by think[box] out to the intersection at west side market, which was really cool!

i also reeeeeeally wanted to be able to take photos of the graffiti along the rail lines, so much of it was SO good

ANDDD!!!! webri found me and was like 'hey did u ever check artfight??' (they had messaged me back during artfight if they could draw something for me and then i forgot about it b/c i never got back around to doing artfight) and i was like 'NO I DIDN'T LEMME DO THAT NOW' and was greeted with this masterpiece

stuff and some explorin'

obliviousally: (ally antitribu)
ran out and about today a little bit because i was off and it was nice (was i also off for a week and a half nearly up until this past tuesday? yes). tony wanted to go down and see the weinermobile, but the car was being a pain (battery needed charged), so i zipped down and took some pictures

also scooty'ed around a little and went to northside marketplace and browsed (i kept thinking the rolled ice cream place was still there, because i really wanted some ice cream, but it is not)

on the way back, i noticed an open door and a pulled back piece of fence off the towpath of the little rubber production place that burned down last year, so i peeped in and took some photos (i didn't want to go cavorting around in just sandals lol)

then scooty'ed back up to highland square and put up a bunch of zines and stickers around. stopped at angel falls and got a cold drink (they don't have chai freezes anymore!!! i literally JUST learned they made them and now they've taken them away ;_;) and a snack before coming back home to laze around all afternoon

beans was doing REALLY badly yesterday and this morning, but he's bounced back quite a bit and is demanding churu (what i was giving him b/c he wasn't interested in his sheba) and shouting about things, which is good to see. he's 16 (SIXTEEN!!!), so very significantly elderly, so it's not a surprise when his health dips a bit, but still very much a 'please don't hide somewhere stupid and die you little shithead'

oryx (whom is huge now, she's about a year, give or take, we think she was probably born in july, we acquired her at the end of august) was feeling under the weather the last couple days, as well, b/c she kept licking her flea meds like and idiot, but she's also back to normal as far as we can tell as well

finn just lives on the porch now that the weather is nice and rotates his sleeping spots every couple days so that i get confused when i can't find him

obliviousally: (i can see it in their eyes)

stuff and current random happenings

obliviousally: (i can see it in their eyes)
i've been meaning to make a post for, like, the last two weeks lol

random things happening

the shitty feral neighbors moved!!!!!!!!!!!!! the handyman told me that they paid their rent up thru june and would be moving by july but it turns out they broke the lease and bailed last week b/c tony reported people whose voices he didn't recognize in the house over there complaining loudly about how awful it was.

turns out, it was their UPSTAIRS neighbors (i was under the assumption that, kind of, everyone i saw over there was part of the whole house and the shitty neighbors had somehow rented the whole place) who are cleaning the lower place out and moving in there? idk if the landlord is renting them the whole place or what exactly is going on, but they're chiller and SO much quieter than the ferals, so that's already a huge improvement

not making it to anthrocon this year, which is a real bummer. my mom can't watch the house (for a couple reasons) and the cats and i can't pay anyone fairly to have to feed beans so frequently lol. if it were just finn and oryx, i could ask someone to stop by and make sure their dishes are full and scoop the box, but beans needs extra care AND he's prone to pooping in the kitchen/outside the litter box and i can't afford to pay someone to deal with that

tony and i got out for a walk the other day, stopped at the little metaphysical shop down the road from us that i've NEVER gone in since moving here lol - very nice little place, chill owners, and they have a cute black catten named chance!! we also stopped at circle k and got taquitos and walked over to the cemetery to eat them where a HAWK landed on a tombstone near us before flying off real low

beginning of the month was, apparently, the 100 year anniversary of the first goodyear blimp flight, so they had all three blimps out taking loops around the city. i got some good photos of them above my workplace and it was pretty cool to see them out together in formation

in the first pic, there's a tiny speck off to the left of the blimp on the left-hand side - that's the helicopter that was doing the route with them to get photo/video and stuff. so tiny in comparison!

i biked up out to merriman falls at the end of last month and the ride OUT there was so nice, it didn't even feel like i was exerting myself, but the ride back felt ROUGH lol it also doesn't help the very end of it before i get to the house, i have to basically walk the bike up the hills in the neighborhood back there so i get home and i'm just D-E-D dead

but on the way out i stopped at each of the trailheads (which is, like, 3 + big bend b/c there's a nice little wooden deck to chill out on and it's about the halfway point)

while in merriman valley, stopped at the happy tails thrift and got a cute scarf, two card decks, some nice embroidery thread, and some wool balls for oryx (she keeps stealing the dryer balls)

after dealing with some shipping bullshit, tony's birthday presents for me finally showed up lol - he'd originally ordered a richard siken zine from someone on etsy and it never showed up, he contacted the seller and they re-sent one and IT never showed up, so eventually he had to request a refund and the seller got real shitty/guilt-trippy about it. like, sorry!!! i would've loved to have had the zine, but idk why nothing you've sent has gotten here, soooooo....

the keychain, postcard, and spooky stickers are from Enthralledyet and the opossum stickers are by niipon! he said he ALMOST bought me one of these shirt, both of which i lost my mind at

i have also acquired a bunch more chickensmoothie uma stuff lol

finally, here's some unfinished sketches from this year so far

Apr. 1st, 2025

obliviousally: (Default)
obliviousally: (Default)

stuff and a relatively quiet march tbh

obliviousally: (Default)
what's been going on in march?

following up from last month's entry lol -- my mom and i are talking again, but not a ton. bud seems to be on his last legs and, for a hot minute there, she was staying at her apartment. her kitten that she'd gotten when she went back home after the strokes passed away (it got FIP) and she was real broken up about it. and bud texted me the other day - which he never does - talking about 'might be the last time i get to talk to you' and telling me what was going on. so we'll see how much longer he lasts

those weird ocular migranes haven't shown up in a while, which i suppose is a good thing. stuff on the thyroid front have been the same, but i still haven't figured out my RAI stuff, tbh

cats have been doing well. oryx is getting looooooooooong and bigger. she's real slender, but has meat on her bones. i don't think she's going to be very BIG or chonky. i'm glad she took to free feeding easily and is happy to have wet food when offered, but doesn't feel the need to go feral for it. beans is still skinny/underweight, but still ravenous for food. he was a little rough for a week or so there, really quiet/lethargic, but perked back up pretty quickly. he's still demaning cuddles and food and getting around really well, i just wish he could put on a little weight. i've also had to start giving him a bath now and then b/c he just gets grodey and gets food on his face and stinky hind feets. he's been pretty tolerant of it, but he's not super strong anymore lol and i sit in the tub with him and just hit the spot that need it as opposed to getting his whole body submerged. still doesn't like it, but it's manageable

we still do not have new upstairs neighbors! the people who were supposed to move in, the one lady lost her job, like, two days after signing the lease. so it's been quiet up there in the interim. it did get me to really clean up/tidy/organize the basement storage area, tho, so i guess that's a perk

while cleaning out the basement, i found my iriver that bob gave me when we lived in silverdale! shockingly, with the charging/transfer cord still attached and everything (the usb part is a little rusted, but i can plug it into a usb port lol). it works and i re-installed rockbox on it, so it's nice to have it as a non-data backup.

the downside of the weather breaking is that the neighbors have been annoying as hell - burning stuff in their backyard, all the kids from either side of the house running around all afternoon screaming and shrieking and wailing about things, hitting each other with sticks, running through the backyard all the time, etc., etc. i'd like a forty foot fence around me house with a six foot wide moat around there, tbh

i also cleaned a bunch of the front porch and tossed out the old pink loveseat that was in the back of it that a rat was nesting in. the porch IS still a mess, but i know where everything is at the moment and it's easier to access, at least. also set the big dog kennel up in the basement in case we ever need to use it for the cats if there's, like, a tornado warning or something

most of this month has been pretty chill. money has been SUPER tight, so i've been shifting my focus to things that don't cost money, like little pixel animal adopts on the chickensmoothie site lol

wermz

emblings

familiars

vastrals

and, of course, i am playing around with starting my own lol - it's just kinda fun to make little pixel dudes to share, tbh

anyhow, i have three work days left this week and then i'm off for a week-ish for my birthday but i'll probably try to work some b/c i need to make a little money AND my vacation just got approved for anthrocon, so i gotta find money to sit aside for that, as well (room and reg is already taken care of, i don't have to pay for that)

stuff and neighbor woes and some art

obliviousally: (i can see it in their eyes)
upstairs toilet must have gotten fixed, but the upstairs neighbor also moved out which is eeeh, good and bad. their kids were kinda loud, but they were overall mostly quiet - just music noodled frequently, but they could at least play decently. the downside is that: we're gonna get a new neighbor and it's a gamble on what that might end up being. the majority of individuals have been okay, or at least tolerable, except for that one woman and her children that had to be evicted and then weren't even out of the house when the landlord and the sheriff came down. i wish he wouldn't rent the place out at all, but what can you do

also dreading the inevitable $50/mo rent hike when i need to renew my lease ://// every year i get a meager raise and every year it's eaten up by my rent going up

been trying to draw more - or at least keep busy a little creatively

working on a ref for ancyn (base is by garoline) b/c i saw this base and it has SUCH ancyn vibes, so that was a big bit of inspiration to play around with it. i'm liking how it's coming out so far, at least. gonna add some more stuff to it, i think, as well, and make it more of a full ref sheet like my ally one is

also working on a commission thing~

also also realized i never posted these here?????? glimmer for mitsene (from her webcomic glimmer), cassiopeia for suzanami, and a kailani for me (her anthro destiny version - just straight opossum lol)

got a fit of inspiration at the end of december - AFTER i'd done my 2024 art summary, NATURALLY (which i also realize i haven't posted here lol - there's probably gonna be a bunch of individual art posts after this)

stuff and it's a new year, i suppose

obliviousally: (possum trashcan)
last year was.......something, that's for sure

1/21 - snickers passed away
2/27 - tony went to the er for a kidney stone
3/31 - i went to the er for an infection, found a nodule on my thyroid

april was a nice reprieve, with the eclipse and pet/housesitting for chris and sam

final shape came out in june, and i went swimming with my mom

anthrocon in july!!!

7/29 - tony's abdominal surgery
8/26 - the cat distribution system chooses us
9/11 - my thyroidectomy

late october, tony's leg started to flare up with sciatica pain and it was about a solid 3-4 weeks of dealing with that and multiple er trips before it felt like anyone actually took it as seriously as it was

11/5 - tony's microdiscectomy

i got sick for about two weeks later in november, as well - still don't know exactly what it was, but i completely lost my voice for a weekend and spent half a week coming in to work for 2.5 hours so that i could leave early and not get an ~occurrence~ over it

what a shitshow. i hope this year is better than that mess

i went out with friends on new year's eve for glow bowling. tony stayed in, for a variety of reasons. it was pretty nice! the music selection could've been better (they didn't play the good stuff until after midnight???), but there was a 2-3 lane sing-along of 'bohemian rhapsody' right after midnight

i BOWLED really well - my FORM was great, but the pins were NOT cooperating lol and i don't remember my score, but it would've been better if it had matched how beautifully i was rolling the ball down the lane lol

i thought i'd be more sore the next day, but instead i just slept until 1pm and then got up and ran some errands and cleaned the living room a bit b/c on nye i noticed that something was leaking from the upstairs neighbors' bathroom and by the time i was out of work is was fully leaking thru the drop ceiling so i had to half dismantle/tear that apart and put bins underneath and TRY to get ahold of my upstairs neighbor and eventually i just shut the main water line off and texted my landlord to let the upstairs neighbor know what's going on and how to turn things back on (we both have access to the basement)

it wasn't until the time i got up on new year's day that it seemed like things got sorted - but the important thing is the house has water AND there's nothing leaking in my living room anymore. i'll have to message the landlord for a new drop ceiling tile, but that's not a huge deal

i also bought a little shirt for oryx (which i thought was gonna be too big as a dog's xxs but it fit her just right lol she's getting so big)

stuff and what a nightmare couple months

obliviousally: (u g h)
god, i feel like there's barely been breathing room for the last two-ish months

tony's leg/back issues have improved dramatically since his surgery. at his post-op, his surgeon was really happy with his progress. he's still using a cane, but he's able to generally move/get around pretty well and is able to drive again. he gets some electric jolts in his sciatic nerve sometimes, but it's not crippling. his spine will still be healing for a bit, but hopefully things level out

work has been work. i applied for the marketing assistant position, but i doubt i'll hear anything soon (even tho it's been up for 30~ days so far) b/c of the holidays and it's just a slow process in libraries to begin with. our part-timer (benjamin) moved to goodyear to go full-time, which is pretty cool for him

kitten situation (as seen from my pic-a-day posts lol) is here to stay. oryx has been getting bigger and lankier, losing her baby teeth (three so far!), learning her name, harassing tony with affection, playing fetch with q-tips and fluorescent mice, learning not to bolt out the front door, sleeping above our heads in bed, had her first chatter, has been trying out meows, seems to like to hiss/growl to play, and has generally been a delight to have

she's still learning a lot of things the big cats know not to do, but she's been pretty good so far. she likes sitting on the side of the tub and watching the water/bubble. i brought in a bunch of crunchy leaves to put in her playpen and she fuckin' loved that shit. she'd mrrl at me to bury her in the leaves so she could 'ambush' me

beans is still not a fan, and she likes to chase him down, but they're tolerating each other. i've seen her and finn kinda play a little, but it's not often (he's usually sleeping tbh) and it's mostly finn just trying to stand on her

she is, weirdly, not treat-motivated. any i've offered her she hasn't wanted. she DOES like churu, tho

we didn't plan to get another cat, but the cat distribution system told us now was the time apparently. she's been a good distraction/something to focus on with all the chaos, though

i just recently got over a pretty gnarly two-week sinus/cold thing. basically had to go home early for three days in a row (i'm at 12 'occurrences' over a 52-week period......) and one day i stupidly took nighttime meds and had to go into work and i don't recommend that to anyone

this month has been a fuckin mess. tony got an emergency microdiscectomy on the 5th and has been in recovery since then. i caught a wicked cold on monday that's just gotten worse over the week to the point where i can barely talk. let's hope december lets up maybe???

stuff and emergency spinal surgery

good fucking lord has this week been a shitshow. and not just the election

last saturday (early morning), we finally went back to the ER (the ambulance FINALLY authorized a transport). tony ended up being admitted b/c of numbness in his right leg. later in the day, a neurosurgeon came to talk to us about how, "listen, i know this is a sudden decision to make, but i think back surgery is the most logical step from where we are now" and we had to make a decision about having it while he was admitted, or getting discharged and seeking one through his regular doctor at summa

we talked about it and, given that he'd already been going through the 'conservative' steps for his back issues/herniated disc, surgery was something very real and expected in his future anyhow. this sciatica coming on like a mack truck just hastened things a bit

he had surgery (microdiscectomy) on tuesday and stayed for one and a half more days b/c people at the hospital could not get their communication in order about if he was leaving with a walker (he couldn't confidently walk on his own) or if we were just getting a script and we kept getting jerked around and gaslit about it. his surgeon and quite a few of the nurses were great, but a lot of the techs and some of the other nurses and regular doctors were....not so much

his surgeon was really happy with the surgery and has high hopes for his recovering. tony also said when PT came around to visit him afterwards they were impressed he was keeping his legs moving and were really happy with his situation upon getting up and moving around. not quite like some folks we've read about who 'walked right out of the hospital', but his nerve has been compressed for nearly all of his life and has only ratcheted up in the last 10~ years or so, so it'll take longer for things to heal/go back to 'normal' (and the nerve may never fully be 'normal' again, but it'll be better than it was before saturday!)

but he's home now and the pain is being managed pretty decently. it's really night and day from when he was in pain before the surgery to now. it's still quite a few weeks of recovery, but he can get up and move a bit and will have to slowly work on regaining his strength/muscle mass in his legs since he was basically bedridden for the last 3-4 weeks

i have been running non-stop since saturday (well, truly, before then), back and forth to the hospital, rearranging half of the house, sleeping at the hospital in his room for two nights, running errands today, etc., etc. it's been exhausting, but at least from here, hopefully each day is a step of improvement

i've been off work since tuesday, as well. i'm waiting for the surgeon's office to file my FMLA paperwork (or get back to me about it). i feel bad b/c i hate to inconvenience my coworkers (and this week has been ROUGH for everyone at work, too, everyone's going through it), but i need to be home for right now. hopefully by end of sunday tony will be a bit more situated in being able to do what he needs to do on his own and i can go back to work

stuff and thyroid surgery

obliviousally: (ally head)
had my total thyroidectomy yesterday! everything went super well and the one thing i was most concerned about - voice issues - has been good! just general sore throat vibes, which i am very thankful for

i did a lot of rambling on my bsky about it. some snippets lol b/c i don't feel like retyping everything

minor post-surgery annoyances: the numbness/waking-up-from-being-asleep tinglies in my right hand/arm and numbness on the left side of my face (both from something during the surgery)

also having to be disconnected if I gotta go pee
September 11, 2024 at 5:06 PM

ooh got disconnected from a couple things (heart monitors, bp cuff, fluids) so I feel a lot. less restrained to the bed/having to delicately move around with all the wires
September 11, 2024 at 6:00 PM

had 'dinner' - pot roast w/mashed potatoes, carrots, mac and cheese, pound cake. very thankful i can have a normal diet for this, but I'm gonna take it easy with food the first couple days b/c i know stuff is swollen
September 11, 2024 at 6:02 PM

my biggest worry/concern about the whole thing was issues with my voice b/c the thyroid lays on top of the laryngeal nerve but it just sounds like I've got a really sore throat and Tony already had to tell me to shush a bit so relieved about that
September 11, 2024 at 6:08 PM

now if they ever stick me in a room lol been waiting for one since 3-ish? some other higher priority stuff has come thru, so it's understandable, but I just want to get cozy for the evening
September 11, 2024 at 6:19 PM

finally made it to a room! they let me know there was one ready not long before my last post, but lots of stuff going on kept me down in the post-op area. now I have pudding and a cherry icey and clothing and can move around lol
September 11, 2024 at 9:50 PM

belatedly, tinglies/slight numbness is normal. the way they position your neck and arms during the surgery, plus some of the medication, tends to cause it. it hasn't changed all day, just consistent, and it feels like there's places where it's fading, too
September 11, 2024 at 11:25 PM

staff isn't concerned too much about it I have normal face/hand movement and feeling, it should clear up gradually. it's been kinda nice b/c the ice pack isn't super cold when I have it on my neck lol
September 11, 2024 at 11:26 PM

woken up around 3am for vitals/blood. woken up just before 6am for some inquiries (pain, etc) + to let me know at some point this morning the surgery team will be around. sleep was alright otherwise, room. neighbor has kept the TV on all night x_x consistent volume, but louder than i'd like lol
September 12, 2024 at 6:09 AM

now it's just being home and dealing with the sore/swollenness of the incision spot and my throat area in general - the pain is extremely minimal, but i gotta be careful moving my head

stuff and UHHHH WINDOW KITTEN???

obliviousally: (Default)
so, uh, we have a kitten

monday night, tony was at his desk in his office and caught something black out of the corner of his eye on the landing outside the window next to his desk. he thought: "oh cool a black squirrel???" because critters will come up on the landing occasionally. but when he looked over, it was a whole ass tiny kitten and when he opened the window to grab said tiny kitten, he spotted one of the kids from next door (oldest one, arguably the only empathetic one tbh)

he asked the kid, hey uh, is this yours? and she said yeah, but she can't keep it in the house anymore because the 'dogs don't like it' (or that she couldn't keep it safe from the dogs). so tony told her he'd figure something out, but it would be safe with us and then shouted for me (repeatedly, i was running stuff in destiny and had the volume up fglkhdlgkdf)

we both went UHHHHHHH at it and it stared at us in confusion. so we chucked it into the carrier and ran out to pet supplies because, while we have two whole cats, they're both seniors now (uuugh) at 14 and we do not have kitten stuff or even kitten-sized stuff (litterbox, place to stay safe, etc., etc.). bought some kitten food, some catmilk, a litterbox, came back home and set it up in the bathroom

it ate eagerly and we discovered that it's able to eat wet food no problem. it's clean overall - clean ears, mouth, fur, eyes, nose. doesn't look like any bugs on it at all. all fangs, both top and bottom front teeth. eyes are STARTING to change from the baby blue. can groom itself, uses the litter box, is pretty chill and not skittish/feral-ish. likes to hang out on the bed with us and sleep in the middle where any hawk could just swoop in and grab it - no sense of self preservation

we THINK it's somewhere 4-6 weeks. probably closer to the 5 week range. I THINK it might be one of the two kittens they had a few weeks back (the day my mom and i went to the county fair, after my appointment with the surgeon about my thyroidectomy and stuff) - they had found two 1-2 week old kittens that a mother cat had left somewhere and they asked if i wanted them. to which i said 'no' b/c i couldn't care for a newborn kitten. i recc'd to their parents/adults to reach out to one of a kind pets and hopefully they could help, but i heard nothing else after that. i assumed, as one would when it comes to two abandoned newborn kittens taken in by the mess of a house next to mine, that they had passed away - BUT GIVEN THE TIMEFRAME, i'm wondering if this isn't one of the two that passed

but it's doing cat-stuff VERY well so either this kid really committed to caring for it, it's a different kitten altogether, or some instinct things are just really well hard coded, idk

yesterday, i was off (b/c i'm working fri/sat this week), so i drug the big rat cage out of the basement and set it up as a baby cage for it (it's about the size of an adult rat tbh) and put it in the living room. dean and finn are PERTURBED, to say the least. they've hissed at it multiple times but it just does the baby kitten thing and lays down submissively so it doesn't get swatted. finn frequently looks like he's forming thoughts about things he's never had before: like regret

tony has dubbed it 'oryx' (it is also female, but we're just using whatever gender feels right for the conversation when talking about it lol)

we've got an amazon wishlist and stuff set up and if any friends would like to throw a few bucks our way to go towards stuff like vaccinations and a spay later on, it would be greatly appreciated

pet clinic stuff mostly for my own reference, but also transparency

there's a couple local places that do low cost vaccine/spay clinics, all seem to have roughly the same pricing, give or take $5-10. a spay is usually around $80 (and generally includes a rabies vaxx b/c they're required in ohio, and they also include an exam, obv), most vaccines are around $20-30. she doesn't need anything until 8 weeks at the earliest, which is probably a month and some change out

PetGuards: $65~

stuff and surgeries and the fair

everything the last couple months has felt like a fever dream half the time lol

tony had his surgery last week and it went well! way faster than we expected and his recovery has been pretty good so far - i took the week off to be at home in case he needed the extra help getting around, but after the second day he was doing fine on his own so it was like a chill 'do nothing' kind of week for the most part, which was nice after the week and a half of anthrocon which was full throttle the entire time lol

my thyroid surgery is on 9/11 lol - they're yeeting the whole thing and i get two weeks off of work for recovery (i have, like, 300 sick hours to use). hoping everything is a cakewalk, but i'm not anticipating anything otherwise. they're gonna keep me overnight, mostly as observation, so that's neat! at the appointment with the surgeon, my mom was telling him how my grandma had her thyroid removed in the 70's and they did a terrible job on the incision/scar (it wouldn't tan and she'd look like frankenstien b/c of it - all patchwork lol) and the surgeon was like 'well we try to minimize scarring' and i'm like 'yeah but i want a COOL scar'

anyhow i'm just gonna add a cool neck scar to my fursona design

i took a looooong walk (abt. 5mi) on the towpath one weekend - NEEDED to get out of the house and wander, so i took the scooter up to the memorial pkwy trailhead and then walked from there allllll the way up to merriman valley

the weather was beautiful, tho, and i wanted to pop into the thrift store that's up there (i acquired a new catnip fishy for beans). also tried a gelato place there! had an amazing cinnamon sugar gelato.

then i took the bus back home (nearly - had to take the one from merriman and it goes down exchange, but i just grabbed a scooter and took it a couple blocks over) - it was a pretty nice way to spend the day

a handful of local furries had a little impromptu meet at angel falls last month - it was nice to meet some folks i hadn't before! we're thinking of trying to do it a little more regularly lol

i also kinda want to organize monthly art jams, as well, but finding time is always a struggle

but speaking of local furry stuff - i AM organizing a group of ohiofurs to march in the parade for akron pride! so that's a thing i've both NEVER done and AM apparently doing now after years of talking about it

going to get a nice banner printed from techzone and get some stickers printed to hand out to folks along the route - it should be a nice time and there's a decent handful of folks interested!

i also hit up the fair with my mom after my surgeon appointment! i'd been itching to go and didn't think they started locally until later in the month, but our county fair started that day!

so we waltzed in the back entrance, wandered around, looked at some animals, had some fair food, and left just in time before it started downpouring!

their main event this year is some jurassic dinosaur thing, so a lot of stuff was themed that way, which was pretty cute

other than that (which, tbh, has been pretty busy month or so - i also only worked two weeks in july dkjhgdlkfhgdf), D&D has been happening, i've been trying to get back into the swing of art and stuff, as well, as i have some commissions i'm a bit overdue on. my manager is gonna be out at work for her birthday vacation for the next two weeks

we got a FUCKTON of rain last night (and a couple days ago had a gnarly day of storms up north of us mostly - including 2 EF1 tornadoes in the cleveland area) and we had to run out to whole foods to pick up two of their surprise bags we reserved the night before. it started pouring as we left and just did not relent the entire time. the drive there and back was a little nerve-wracking, but not terrible. it kept raining most of the night, as well b/c the storm kind of formed over the region and was moving pretty consistently from south to north, so it just kept dumping water on us for hours

we did get pretty good stuff from our surprise bags, tho! chicken chipotle empanadas, quiche lorraine, blueberry and lemon poppyseed muffins, and brioche buns. for $17 on a gamble it was pretty decent and all stuff we will eat

tomorrow, tho! is geekfest and the punk rock flea market! (and also D&D tomorrow night!), so looking foward to doing that, even if i'll be busy all day lol

(my formatting for this did not pan out quite how i hoped lol)

thyroidectomy scheduled for 9/11 (lol) - whole thing is getting yeeted. looking forward to this mostly being over (aside from medication and whatever post-op iodine stuff i'm gonna have to do) b/c it is a big inconvenience. they initially penciled me in mid-august but i was like holy shit that's not gonna fly. work schedule was already made, tony's neutering is next week, akron pride is the end of august, we JUST got back from anthrocon not that long ago, i need some down time jesus christ

but i went in on tuesday to talk to the surgeon and stuff and they gave me another ultrasound and poked and prodded at my neck, which means it's irritated now. also went to the fair with my mom after the appointment and i think got overheated b/c i didn't eat properly beforehand/early on and didn't really drink anything lol so i ended up calling off yesterday because of that. monday night, as well, i had a teeny bout of that weird shaking like i did awhile back, but it was very short lived, thankfully (could it be thyroid related? who fuckin' knows! i feel like 80% of the shit i have going on could possibly be thyroid related so i'm interested to see what changes after the surgery)

i get two whole paid sick time weeks off for surgery/recovery (i'll be overnight for surgery), which is pretty nice b/c i have something like 300~ hours of sick time accrued

other than that, not a lot has been going on. went to a little furmeet in highland square...last week and met some local folks. took a super long walk on the towpath on....saturday. rode the scooter up to memorial pkwy and parked it there and then walked all the way up to merriman valley. stopped at the little thrift store up there and stopped at a fancy gelato place and got some really good cinnamon gelato before grabbing the bus back home. pretty good way to spend a really nice day

went to the fair, like i mentioned. the art in the park thing up at hardesty park is this weekend, but i work saturday so idk if we'll pop out to it (can never remember if it's fri/sat/sun or just sat/sun). i've mostly been putzing around working on art and playing chickensmoothie and stardew valley.
