stuff and wonderfest and showgirl!

obliviousally: (possum trashcan)
the internet is off at the house, so i'm doing the thing i did when i was sixteen and had no at home internet: going to the library

this also means i'm writing this entry pre-emptively at home b/c the library doesn't open until 1pm and it's 10am rn lol

i'm in my feelings about some shitty things said to me this morning, but yesterday was really nice regardless

yesterday tony and i went to wonderfest! it's a little block party kind of thing in our neighborhood (west hill) that they do annually (and they do some other small events at the pocket park there, too). they were doing some artsy workshop things we thought we interesting, so we each signed up for one.

i did indigo dyeing! the folks running it were really nice (students from kent state and a local artist) and everyone tried different techniques on their items (we got a handkerchief and then another item we could pick from the stuff they brought, i did a baggy shirt as my second item). i'm always kinda surprised what DOESN'T catch the dye when you do stuff like this, and how much you kind of have to plot out what you're doing if you want it to look like something specific. i was going for a star with my handkerchief and tied off the points, but did not think to block out the center of the star (as though the dye would just magically know what i wanted and avoid those areas lol), so i ended up with a handkerchief with a bunch of circles (which tony joked looked like anuses jklghdfgld)

for my shirt i wanted, like, one long diagonal swipe across it and rolled it that way specifically and then wrapped it around a dowel. when i unrolled it, the swipe was WAY bigger than i wanted lol - i thought the dye would permeate further. i ended up doing a second dip by just folding the part i wanted undyed and then dipping in the rest of the shirt THEN flipping it over and wringing it out so the dye bled down into the white section. still wasn't QUITE what i was going for, but it was still a fun experience!

tony did the clay and resin workshop and made a cool little heart based on one of his newer OC's/sona's.

afterwards, we went home for a bit and then i popped back out to grab our items (his had to bake and mine had to dry) and went up to highland to get some drink and stop at the library for movies. ended up grabbing the deluxe edition of 'battle angel alita' which, like, I OWN MOST OF in the paperback manga, but it's boxed away somewhere and i haven't read it in decades i think lol. and every time i WOULD read it, i'd still feel lost b/c the writing felt so dense and there were so many footnotes lol. but i committed this time!! i'll have to pick up the other volumes while it's still fresh in my mind

i'm going down to the main library today (the only branch that's open sundays, even tho it's only for four hours and we all have a lot of Opinionsโ„ข on that at work) and picking up a bunch of DVD's for tony and i know i'll end up grabbing more shit than i need b/c their graphic novel section is pretty varied

after getting back from highland i came home and got dressed to go see the 'the life of a showgirl' movie theater release thing at the nightlight with sam!

i WAS holding off on listening to the album before going, so it'd be a surprise, but i DID cave and listen to it earlier in the day anyhow (sam did the same lol) - kinda glad i did b/c they played the clean lyrics at the theater (which makes sense tbh) and the difference for some of the lyrics is STARK (clean is good for some tracks, explicit is good for others, some are fine either way).

but it was a fun little experience - the audience was chill (and there weren't too many folks, the nightlight is a small arthouse theater so it wouldn't've been packed like a regal or something) and we didn't have screaming preteen girls right in our ears x_x i like the idea of artists doing something like this, getting fans together and showcasing their new work, showing us some behind the scenes stuff with the making of a music video. it's just fun to see behind the curtain in that aspect

the album is 'just okay' for me. like, nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. i'll give it some more full listens, like i usually do with taylor swift albums, and some stuff will grow on me. i feel that maybe she really used a lot of her writing juice on TTPD and, yeah, this album was written in a much happier/more positive time of her life - a blossoming new relationship, the implied 'closing the chapter' on a lot of her previous subject matter (with TTPD's conclusion), but coming off of the tails of TTPD, it doesn't feel like it has as much depth to me (or even for me! and that's also fine lol)

i really love the first three tracks on the album, tho, and the chorus for 'ruin the friendship' has been stuck in my head. i also unironically love 'CANCELLED!'. 'eldest daughter' was kind of a let down, but i've had hayley williams' 'kill me' on repeat and it's a stronger eldest daughter type track lol. it kinda feels like taylor saw a bunch of artists writing eldest daughter stuff and wanted to jump in b/c she, too, is an eldest daughter, but i don't think the vibes are QUITE the same (or, also, it's just not relatable to ME lol). i feel a lot of the tracks, as a whole, are a bit too rhyme-y tho. not the end of the world, just noticable

i'm thinking about going back thru her albums and tracking the songs that i've deemed favorites just to see which albums i've vibed with more vs. the ones i'm just kind of 'okay' about. could be a fun little 'no internet' project lol

other than that, things have been going. still doing grand jury duty, so i'm only physically at work maybe once or twice a week rn. and this week, not at all i believe! i have court all week and endo appointment (thyroid surgery stuff followup) on friday. i'm off on wednesday, which is lame b/c i was aiming originally to be off on saturday, but my manager is.....................difficult.

this also reminds me i need to put my schedule on the calendar....

end of the year faves - books + graphic novels

obliviousally: (spirit writing)
i read 74 books this year. here's my favorites~

๐Ÿ•ฎ Shubeik Lubeik
absolutely gorgeous. it's also thick af, but an extremely engaging story. one of those i really feel is worth going into kind of blind! but i loved the worldbuilding that was done between the chapters. A+, would add to my personal collection

๐Ÿ•ฎ Whatโ€™s The Furthest Place From Here?, Vol. 1: Getting Lost at the End of the World
this is one of those that is gonna need further volumes to piece plot and worldbuilding together, but i liked the general weirdness of it - dumb teenagers being dumb teenagers

๐Ÿ•ฎ Ten Days in a Mad-House
really nice graphic novel adaptation of nellie bly's same-titled book about her investigation into a women's asylum in the late 1800's. the linework in the art is beautiful

๐Ÿ•ฎ It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth
this was one of those punch-to-the-gut books. really resonated with the humor set next to, y'know, sometimes being a complete fucking mess

๐Ÿ•ฎ No One Returns From the Enchanted Forest
i got through cycles of reading a lot of middle grade graphic novels until they all kind of blur together b/c they are released much faster than some other age ranges and they often have very formulaic plotlines. this one stood out just for the amount of worldbuilding put in and i really liked the character interactions

๐Ÿ•ฎ Incredible Doom
early internet bbs's, punk music, diy subculture, teens living on the fringes. i really enjoyed both of these volumes and the kind of bittersweet way everything ends up

๐Ÿ•ฎ My Aunt Is a Monster
this was one of those middle grade gn's that, yeah, had a kind of formulaic underlying plot, but it was made up for by LOOK AT HOW CUTE HER AUNT IS!!! there's also some spy shenanigans and the like, and i really enjoyed how they worked in the main character's blindness

๐Ÿ•ฎ The Faint of Heart
i just really enjoyed the ATMOSPHERE happening in the pages for this one - it felt foggy, oppressive, both miserable and hopeful at the same time

๐Ÿ•ฎ Murder Falcon
another gut punch!!! this was SO heartfelt and also very fun, very sad, and very metal

argumentative, antithetical dream girl

obliviousally: dall-e (possum leggy)
this last weekend was pretty nice/relaxing - i discovered librarything and have spend the last week or so cataloging everything i can find in the house which has multiple benefits: we're bad at remembering what books we have AND if i pack stuff into a box/tote to store somewhere, i can tag it appropriately so we can find it easily later

can ALSO catalog movies and music AND, while it's not a common thing to catalog on the site, video games! which, for the same above reasons, is super useful for us

i still some stuff to go through and add, including stragglers lingering randomly around the house, but i've got the main bookshelves added at least

also started doing some bigtime decluttering of the bedroom (cataloging stuff is part of that lol) b/c it was feeling claustrophobic and messy. things just stack up easily and i'm prone to just let it do so until the invisible, unknown breaking point is hit and i HAVE TO CLEAN.

we had a pretty nice thunderstorm thursday night - TONS of rain and a nice bit of lightning and thunder. there was some sketchy purple bits around us on the radar, but we didn't get hit with anything heavier than heavy rain. apparently there was a tornado touchdown in massillon, but i don't think it was anything significant.

also had a little bit of rumbly last night before bed, as well

garden is coming along nice. i feel like i was def eating tomatoes and peppers out of it by this time last year, but given i didn't really rehab the soil on the one side as much as it needed, i should be glad it's growing anything at all. so the tomats and pepps are coming in slowly, but our strawberries (container) have been producing nicely, as well as my sugar snap peas (when i can beat the birds to them). the cukes are also flourishing! there's quite a few hidden lemon cucumbers i spotted yesterday and a couple of the regular ones starting to look like actual veg

twitter is still impoloding. i'm still scoping out places where i might want to hang out as a twitter 'replacement'

i've got complaints about mastodon - i don't think it's user friendly in terms of signing up. in addition, one of he bigger furry instances just recently decided to shut down, so all those users have to move and find somewhere new to occupy. which is just...............bad for a social media platform. (tho i know masto isn't intended to be, like, an average socmed platform, but people are going to treat it like that b/c they don't understand what federated/unfederated/decentralized/whatever actually means or is for). i was on snouts back in the day (i signed up for masto pretty early on to play around with it) and i didn't even know it imploded when it did. but i'd have been Pretty Annoyed if i'd had a lot of posts/followers/whatever on there and it got nuked

but that's one of those masto things - you're at the whims of the admins of the instance you choose. and if you choose the 'default' mastodon.social instance, other instance owners may restrict that instance from theirs (meaning it's harder to view someone's posts/profile - it's, like, an extra three steps to go and view it on their own instance) and it's also, like, a three step process to follow someone not on your instance, including copypasting their @ info into the search on your instance and then following from there. it's not great

i'm waiting to see if i can acquire a bluesky invite, just to claim my name and play around with it. but i've been on the waitlist for mooooonths x_x

and, like, i don't really want a furry-specific socmed site b/c i LIKE being able to stumble across all different kinds of art and stuff - i don't want to JUST be confined to furry stuff. my twitter feed is a pretty varied and i LIKE it like that. that's why i like tumblr, as well. it can just be stream of thought/personal/art/furry/fandom/horror/games/whatever. and, sure, i can do that on a furry-centric platform, too, but i'm not going to be exposed to/find as much cool stuff i like in that kind of space

so idk, i'm kind of bouncing around everywhere lol

ran 'prophecy' over the weekend with growl and tony!! it was very fun - i like the dungeons where there's lots of space and stuff to explore and the mechanics were enjoyable to do (not like the nightmare that is the second encounter of 'ghosts of the deep')

leaving these full size b/c i like them lol

other than that i've been grinding for the solstice title ('flamekeeper') - i didn't get it last year so i gotta redo everything this year. all i've got left now is.......................killing guardians. which means running either crucible or gambit. i'm hoping for a mayhem week so i can just force myself into crucible b/c killing guardians in gambit is more strategery lol

a little wip, as a treat

i have found no mercy, in these old bourbon hills

obliviousally: (ally pox)
still trying to make an attempt to try and post here more (failing). the instantaneous-ness of twitter/insta/whatever is a real draw lol. i gotta sit down and upload images, write a post, kind of get my thoughts in order instead of just spitting off whatever's on my mind

i think i need both, tho, tbh lol

work is STILL recovering from the ransomware attack. they're basically having to rebuild backend stuff from scratch. as of this past saturday, we still don't have printing from staff computers, but almost all the public pc's are back up. but still no color printing, no scan to email from the copiers, etc. a lot of interoffice extensions are still down, as is our intranet. it's been a ride, for sure

last weekend, we went to the botanical gardens in cleveland for friend sam's birthday - tony and i had never been (surprisingly!), so it was nice little trip. i was very enamored by all the grown over archways and hidden paths and treehouses and YOU COULD CATCH THE FROGS IN THE POND IN THE CHILDREN'S GARDEN FLGKDJGLDJ which is exactly what friend chris and i did when we discovered this information

afterwards, we hit up the only culver's in the area on the way home

i got my contributor copy of 'until it breaks', a zine organized by [personal profile] knifeorchid! i submitted a greyscale variant of my 'marrow made a wife of eve' illustration. you can grab a copy of the zine over here (heed the content warnings)!

quiz that was going around twitter for a hot minute. you can find it here. tracks pretty well for me, tbh. i'm overall comfortable with my gender/body/whatever. i just wanna be, like, a liminal creature basically, but i also don't feel like i need to, like, LABEL that??? idk, i'm just kinda like ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

i had to buy finn a soft cone b/c he's been scratching himself all up behind his one ear and when he has it on, it's just the best thing to watch. he has absolutely zero issues wearing it, i think sometimes he kinda likes it, but it also means just lots of pictures like the above where he's just zoned the fuck out with his one brain cell looking like a jaunty little court jester

i whipped up a neat little brochure for folks to put around anthrocon next weekend (bummed about not being able to go) and hand out at the ohio furs meet on friday

(click thru for full view)

i think they'll be a fun little souvenir lol - inside has info about upcoming meets over the next two months and the outside has info about the local groups and stuff

trying to focus on small, good things. trying not to think about the looming financial burden i'm gonna be stuck with for the next year hhhh

not planning on doing anything for the birthday (big four-oh...), just hoping the weather stays nice so i can prep the garden and plant stuff and clean the porch up, mostly (well, some more, at least). play some destiny, maybe buy a fancy cake slice or something.

might also get a nice storm tomorrow, but hoping it doesn't hit until the afternoon b/c tony has an mri in the morning

i feel the lavender haze creeping up on me

obliviousally: (ally pox)
okay so otherwise, what's been going on this last month?

i'm trying to weasel my way onto anthrocon staff (fingers crossed!) b/c, honestly, i DO love staffing cons and helping out, but it also makes ATTENDING easier for me and will save me a little money, which is always appreciated. i've been wanting to staff at ac for awhile now and just haven't actually put my feelers out there to see about making it reality b/c [gestures broadly] and then pandemic and everything

might be also doing some game/ttrpg stuff at matsuricon?? maybe???? that one's kinda up in the air atm

DID reach out to andy, who runs oddmall, about furry stuff and he's on board. so i gotta find time to get up with him and have a chat about what i'd like to see happen. can't do it at the event downtown due to how the knight center rents the space out (by room), but CAN do it at the two events they have in richfield (hotel, rents the whole space out together for him). and then it's a matter of lighting a fire under local folks to get them wanting to help out/be involved/present panels/whatever. i WANT it to be a COMMUNITY thing, not a 'oh ally organizes that' and everything be on me. aiming for sort of something between a meetup and, like, a mini con??? so, yeah, like folks running panels about furry stuff and maybe a section for furry vendors/artists/whatever and, like, maybe a fursuit photo area or something?? vague ideas currently, nothing set in stone, but fingers crossed for something cool to come of this!

sketch (and whatever) dump!!

playing around with destiny!poe. first one is a variant on the cryptarch robes, b/c that was her profession before becoming a guardian (and she only JUST became a guardian lol - so she's got, like, people IN the tower and IN the city who, like, she was buddies/acquaintances/friends/family with only a few months to a year ago and now she's trying to piece together journals and things she left behind to play catchup with the whole guardian blank slate).

second is some kind of casual wear. third is a drawover of her in game character selection screen

oekaki!! done on rainbowmancer/freakphone's drawing room. this is all the bigger it is lol. i think 300x300

still trying to get down ancyn's design. like, it's half-formed in my head currently. but stuff bounces around, which is suppose works anyhow b/c she's been around a couple hundred years, so you'd def change your appearance now and then. short hair looks cute, long hair looks cute, etc., etc.

i rambled a bit about her on twit, so i'll paste that shit here, too

she's been.....interesting to roll around across my brainmeats b/c her origin is my old self-insert vtm char (angel) who ate her sire during her embrace so, like, There's That. and angel's well past all that shit. but i put ancyn like, IN that shit

something Very Bad got into her partner and she had to put him down (for the time being), so she's returning to the last city after a couple hundred years (left when the tower was being built) carrying this simultaneous grief and relief and Still Processing what happened

so she spends a lot of her time with distractions to keep her mind off of whatever happened (and prolonging the Processing part) - running gambit, playing cards, gambling, helping an old friend with eliksni quarter stuff, etc., etc)

it's also been interesting re-creating her partner b/c BACK IN THE DAYYYY when i was a god awful high schooler, angel's vampire bf/sire was based on a guy i dated briefly and had Complicated Teenage Feelings about for a very long time

and i'm, like, weirdly all about not retconning a lot of dumb shit i've done for/to my characters lol, but i'm 20yrs on now. so for ancyn i kept his initials and dark hair, but i've been making something new of him

(mostly this version is getting based on rivers/lakes and selkie vibes b/c i fuckin love selkies)

other stuff has been about the same. money sucks. work is fine. every day is closer to nice weather and green trees.

i sent some of my inktober zines out for a zine exchange for a server i'm in and i realized i'm almost completely out of them now! think i'll use this as an excuse to finish up the in progress 2019 one, as well, and get some more copies printed. maybe play around with doing some hand binding or something for them for funsies

and, finally, books i read this last month!

new year

maybe i'll try (again) to commit to updating this more often. tho, tbh, it HAS been updated more frequently this last year than the last decade i think lol

tony made a lemon pigasaurus for this year, to join our previous lemonpigs. he also made a 'tangerine ghost' and i took photos with our other ghosts so he could post it on twitter

accomplisments so far this year: i washed some dishes, i cleaned my desk a bit

i want to try and get a new computer chair this year so i can be more comfortable at my desk and maybe stream and shit. i'd like to get a bigger desk or maybe reorganize my space a little? idk. i wanna start riding my bike more (and save money if i don't need to take the e-bikes and scooters lol). i also want to try bookbinding (more than i fucked around with it once at least) just b/c i wanna make little books and shit idk use all those pretty papers and shit i've had lying around for the last decade

gonna try to see about getting a furry track going at oddmall locally - the owner loves furries and the community here has been thriving recently, so i think it'd be a good option for local folks in terms of something convention-like, but not a full blown con. a friend also asked if i wanted to help do volunteer stuff in the games room at matsuricon in cbus - i'm not really big into anime anymore, but i DO like staffing, so i said i'd give it a shot just for the option to futz around somewhere new. won't have to blow a bunch of money on travel/hotel/registration, either, apparently, which is nice

2022 art summary - i was initially bummed about how little personal work i did this year. and, like, i did a lot of commissions! a lottttt of booty icons, especially. but i also did some bigger pieces and have been working on some ref sheet comms and another multi-part comm kinda thing, as well

2022 artist wrapped - this, however! made me feel a little better. i do really like that wip thing of ancyn! it's not polished or 'done', but it's something i enjoyed fucking around with a lot

2022 sketches - i know a posted a bunch of these in a previous entry, but here's all??? of them from this last year. a couple below, as well, but i have to remember that even if this stuff isn't ~finished~ and ~polished~, it's still art! i still did stuff! more than five personal pieces! i can always go back and do something else with them! and i don't tend to have too many junk sketches or stuff that i don't care for anymore, with how i utilize references. i may not finish a rough sketch, but i'm generally content enough with it if that's all the further it gets

some sketches slapped on some textures for funsies - feel like i might start doing this again just to share sketches more than just screenshot from whatever ipad app i'm working in lol

leomaris ref - this was one of the big refs i've been working on over the year and especially over the last month to get it finished up b/c i could finally see the finish line lol. grey is regular colors, the other are alternate colors for the character. this was a lot of fun to work on and also a fun challenge b/c the commissioner only had one or two visual references at the time, but a LOT of inspiration material and was good at describing what they wanted. i especially like the chibi and the portrait, myself

i hit 100 books read this last year!

๐Ÿ“– Lore Olympus: Vol. 3
obviously since i'm three volumes in, i've been enjoying this lol

๐Ÿ“– Numb to This: Memoir of a Mass Shooting
this was REALLY good - a very introspective read from the eyes of a school/mass shooting survivor

๐Ÿ“– Anti/Hero
this was cute! one of the substitute psa's recc'd it to me the other night when we were closing together. a quick read with a lot of characterization. art is cute and the whole thing was pretty fun

๐Ÿ“– Children of the Woods
also read this the other night at work lol - i think there's a lot of interesting plot here that wasn't explained lol. but i liked the way the story flowed and especially how amber's storyline went down

๐Ÿ“– The Wolf Suit
a cute picture book of a sheep making a wolf suit to venture into the woods to get berries

๐Ÿ“– You Can't Kill Snow White
a teen picture book! i actually requested the purchase for this and the youth services person who does the ordering emailed me and thanked me for the cool recc to the collection! i liked the story, told from the viewpoint of the queen wanting to murder snow white

i'm also weeding the children's picture book collection at work for the children's librarian (who is out on maternity leave until march), and while doing that i've been reading cute stuff i spot. also helped me bridge the gap on my goodreads books read this last year to 100!

charms, art dump, rambling

clicking goes to my ko-fi shop~

charms that i got made through [personal profile] knifeorchid's discord group order earlier this year! it's very, very fun to see your art as physical items. i also absolutely adore the hook one - i thought it would make a great charm back when i first drew it

made all these cute little merch graphics with canva, since half of my awake time is spent at work and without photoshop or something, and canva's great for this kinda shit and i don't have to really wrack my brain over graphic design lol

art dump behind the cut )

other than that, uh

i picked up a new phone (on payments of course) this month - moto g power 2022. my old one (moto g6) still works OKAY but it was doing shit like not charging, or having to be sat a Very Specific Way to charge, or just turning off whenever it felt like, often in the middle of the night when i had an alarm set. sometimes it would decide it was 'too cold' and shut off at the end of my scooter ride so i couldn't end the ride in the app. it was slow, but i'd adapted, but it was still s l o w

new phone does have some finickiness, which i knew going in, but i wanted as new as i could get in my budget. it feels like it's not as fast as it SHOULD be for a phone that's three years newer than my g6, but since i've been using it normally now it feels decently speedy in comparison. also, more space, a really nice camera (in comparison). it's bigger (taller) which is kind of annoying, but i'll get used to it

i also managed to put my screen protector on with NO BUBBLES OR DEBRIS UNDER IT. the true accomplishment here

work has been..............................something. a lot of something. both of our student workers quit within a week of each other, out part timer transferred to another branch. we GOT a teen librarian from a different branch transferred over (heard rumors of issues with the manager there). had, like, three incidents to do paperwork on with neighborhood kids last month, including one where they threw a whole kid's scooter into our foyer and at the inside automatic doors and then went around pounding on the windows in the front of the branch

i have four days off for christmas, which is nice, i'm hoping to maybe try to accomplish some kind of art but i'll probably just end up playing destiny b/c i can't manage my time anymore lol

tonight, tho, i'm going over a friends' place for a holiday dinner and that should be nice (idk if tony's going with or not, he was invited but is also sketchy with holiday stuff)

forgot i wanted to add reading stuff too lol...

๐Ÿ“– Little Monsters, Volume 1
interesting premise, nice art. i liked the muted, kind of scratchy vibe this has visually. interested to see where it goes, there's not a TON of plot in the first volume, but you get to know the characters a little bit

๐Ÿ“– The Closet #1
i thought this would be..........more? maybe it will be in later volumes lol. WELL, LIKE, i thought it would be more actual monsters kind of thing (and maybe it will turn into that? manifestation of fears or something) but it's mostly interpersonal relationship drama seen tangentially through the eyes of a child. which is fine, just not what i prefer lol. the main character is just a shitshow of a pathetic human being, in the bad way lol which is great writing, but man is he unlikeable lol

๐Ÿ“– Carole & Tuesday, Vol. 1
this is super cute so far! i haven't watched the anime yet, but i've been aware of it. my only gripe is that sometimes they draw carole's neck really long and it's disconcerting lol

๐Ÿ“– Die, Vol. 1: Fantasy Heartbreaker
i am......kinda? liking this? the art is BEAUTIFUL and there's an interesting story being told here, but it's not sunshine and roses. the plot IS pretty dreary, which is fine, but probably not what someone who reads the premise of 'adults have to return to the d&d fantasy world they played in as teens' would be expecting

i also didn't realize this was by kieron gillen and i REALLY did not like the writing in 'the wicked + the divine' when i first read it years ago (i don't think i finished the first volume??) so maybe i'll give that another shot just to see if it was as bad as i remember in comparison

๐Ÿ“– Home Sick Pilots, Volume 1: Teenage Haunts
the art in this is beautiful, the plot is a little convoluted but this one feels like there's enough plot fed in to keep you wondering that'll probably be elaborated on in later volumes (though the ending of this vol does take a turn i didn't expect lol so it could go from 'girl pilots house like a mech' conceptually to literally)

๐Ÿ“– Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1: Dog And Chainsaw
i kept seeing thinkpieces about how the women in this SUCK(affectionate), and we had the first couple volumes on the shelves at work, so i figured i'd give it a shot. i don't hate it! the devil designs are pretty cool and it honestly doesn't feel AS fanservice-y as i'd expect. i think i've got vol. 3 sitting on my desk atm, so it's got me willing to learn more at least lol

๐Ÿ“– Sports Is Hell
i'd seen this on the shelves at work, but someone requested it for a hold and i started skimming through it at the desk. figured i'd give it a quick read b/c it's pretty short. it's WILD biting satire of politics under the veneer of sports - you can see the juxtaposition of sports riots (good) vs. activism riots (bad) and the ever-constant battle between how to be the Right Kind of Activist or revolutionary

i've got a............tall stack of graphic novels on my desk currently that i need to power through lol

i am currently at work, thinking about how it's going to be pitch black when i leave here at 6pm >:C

twitter is on fire, but i'm curious to see how it's going to play out in the long run. everyone is scrambling to find other sites and the idea that, for a lot of people, the only way they contact each other is via twitter is....weird? i mean, i guess i can see it b/c there's a messaging system and stuff but i've always followed people whose content i enjoy (or who's chatter i enjoy!) on multiple sites b/c who knows what might shut down randomly some day and/or some people use different sites differently!

like, i crosspost from instagram, but i really only post photos and finished art there and i don't really often post photos many other places (aside from the crossposting, at least). i have accounts on a lot of different sites just to claim my name and i like trying new places out. being sequestered to one or two places is definitely a newer social media problem

i've been playing around a bit more with mastodon but, honestly, i really don't care for the whole federated deal. it should be more like tumblr where you have your main account and then can join other instances (similar to how communities work here). having to be stuck (i know you're not STUCK stuck, but you know what i mean) on one place and then have to pack up everything and move to another is just.........it's not a user friendly platform, imo. and it's not a place that's gonna pick up a lot of twitter refugees b/c of that.

like, i gotta show people where to find their gmail when they're LOGGED IN to their google account. like, that's what up and coming websites need to realize is their baseline user. or, like, people who think their email lives on their desktop/phone

but i like how twitter works when it comes to cool stuff showing up on my feed. tumblr is similar, but my stuff over there is mostly fandom-related. a lot of other sites don't quite have that

plus, i just like a place to scream into the void off the cuff and not have to, like, Write A Postโ„ข

i've been grinding in destiny - got my Very First Title (ghost writer) and i've been going back to finish grinding out for 'reaper' since i didn't finish that one. not fussed about 'scallywag', i don't think i'd use it for anything lol

i keep wanting to nuke desma and roll poe in her place but poe isn't dead yet in destiny universe, she's a cryptarch lol so i keep putting it off. at least until they give me an armor set i can't refuse like they did for solstice this year and forced my hand to roll angel/ancyn

some random links and shit idk trying to kill time for my last hour of work

cooking
Southern Style Neckbones Recipe
made this the other night and it was delicious. we usually just buy smoked neckbones/hocks/shanks to make greens with, but we bought some neckbones raw and had to do something with them. i only changed a couple things, based on what i had/didn't have. veg oil instead of bacon fat (didn't have any on hand), added some onion powder, used better than bullion instead of powdered bullion. came out amazing, though, would definitely make again

reading
๐Ÿ“– Bolero by Wyatt Kennedy
really, really enjoyed this. flawed, messy 'protagonist' and beautiful art

๐Ÿ“– Human Remains #1 by Peter Milligan
pretty heavy covid metaphor, but i like the concept going on here, so i hope it's expanded upon

๐Ÿ“– Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story Graphic Novel by Scott Peterson
didn't realize this was an adaptation of an older middle grade book - it reads like it and i mean that in a good way!

๐Ÿ“– Constantine: Distorted Illusions by Kami Garcia
idk if i'm reading these out of habit now or if i DO like them lol. nice art (especially loved the way the panels were done in the sections where he meets a high society wizard or whatever), but i'm so used to grizzled, exhausted constantine that a young, spry one seemed confusing lol

๐Ÿ“– Other Ever Afters: New Queer Fairy Tales by Melanie Gillman
not a lengthy read, a couple neat little fairy tales done in a nice, i think watercolor? style

๐Ÿ“– Supper Club by Jackie Morrow
kind of frantic, messy, felt very accurate to teenage friendships and how they can become strained and frayed in that time near graduation

๐Ÿ“– Over My Dead Body by Sweeney Boo
beautiful art. story seemed to move a little quickly? but a lot of stuff i read is middle grade and it hits plot points snap-snap-snap. but still great to look at, regardless

๐Ÿ“– Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend by Alys Arden
i really love jacquelin de leon's art, so that was the main reason for picking this up, but it was a fun read. i'm starting to see how some of the dc teen books are connecting together in some places and it's fun to pick up on that especially b/c i was never a big dc reader so i'm going in semi-blind for some characters!

๐Ÿ“– The Nice House on the Lake, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV
i've loved everything i've ready of tynion's stuff this year ('something is killing the children', 'house of slaughter', 'the woods'). this is very intriguing so far and i'm very interested to see where things go

okay wasted enough time, closing duties and then home!

more sandman musings

obliviousally: (spirit writing)
so since i finished the original sandman run last week, i decided to finally delve into the expanded universe stuff that's been being put out over the last couple year

i'd read the two death tpb's, which i both adore, quite some time ago. i'll probably revist them, but some stuff in them hits close to home (tho tbf there's a lot of little things in sandman that hit close to home in different ways). i haven't read dream hunters or the thessaly books or the lucifer series, tho. so i'm kind of skipping around

(i also feel like i should go back and start locke and key over again b/c i DID read the first couple gn's but not much past that and i know there's a sandman crossover, sooooo)

(tony also bought me, for my birthday, the key to hell from the pin collection that got put out for locke and key, so i feel obligated now lolol)

i think back when i originally finished sandman i wasn't too keen about a new dream - which feels typical when you spend ten volumes with a character over their development arc and then they are simply gone. but i am interested in daniel as dream and how he interacts with things - a being the same as morpheus but also not

re-reading sandman felt like an intimate experience, none of my other friends have read it, so it very much feels like it's one of those special things that's just mine, which is fine. but reading the new stuff is all unknown to me! completely new! it feels less restrained, in a way? the introduction of dora, daniel's disappearance (different than dream's disappearance that opens the original book) and the feeling that something is not quite right.

sandman musings

obliviousally: (spirit writing)
i finished re-reading sandman today (blew through the last three tpb's on my work shift) and it's still a masterpiece

i can't remember if i read it a time between the first time i read it (in the late nineties, finding it hidden in plain sight at my hometown library) and now (another library, naturally). i THINK i may have, but i can't recall for sure

i forced myself to take my time with it. when i first read it, i devoured it, blew through it, and missed SO much. didn't make connections between the characters that come and go, how the story intertwined around them. but this time i MOSTLY did. a few that came up at the end i had to double back and remember who they were from the very first book, a name i'd left behind

it made more sense now, i understood how the pieces fit together, at least

even knowing that dream dies doesn't change the heaviness and the suspense of the books/issues that precede that. the destruction of the dreaming by the furies is no less brutal or foreboding than if i didn't know. i think the knowing almost makes it moreso - an ending will happen here and you must prepare for it, however you see fit
